I believe that literature exists to serve as an escape for people. I also believe that literature is intended to teach us, and Dystopia most definitely teaches readers about the dangers of governmental control, high technology, and environmental abuse.
We discussed the central themes that come into play in Dystopian Literature today, and how this genre could be popular right now because it can be applied to the lives many of us lead.
What part of Dystopian literature most applies to your life?
I would definitely say the control part of it, the only thing in my life that holds me down is money, it's an evil thing. It makes people act out of their normal behavior. I am controlled by the government because I can not live the life I want to lead without paper money. I am forced to use the governments system of aquiring resources and objects. Also, If I resist that system, the government takes things away from me, driver's license, assets, wages etc. I have no problem at all with working for a living, but until I get to that point of having a career my options are limited and it's out of my control. Sorry kind of ranted lol
ReplyDeleteAmen my friend. You put that right to a T. Can I get a hallelujah.?!
DeleteIt's a horrible thing to have to wait but sometimes that's all you can do
DeleteMoney is a big factor and controlled by the government. Every little aspect of our lives is controlled by the government. Our technology as well. So really the government has control over everything but love.
DeleteI think that control is part of the reason why Dystopia is not only popular with young adults, but also adults. Although we live in a "free" country, there is not a lot of to be "truly free." Everyone answers to someone: parents, teachers, bosses, children, spouses, bill collectors...list goes on and on. Control also goes beyond laws - control is also considered as a social norm. Society controls the masses by deciding what is "right" or what is acceptable. As such, people are then controlled by culture. Those that choose to not abide by those societal rules are often thought of as "outsiders" rather than people resisting control. Interesting to think about.
DeleteThe controlling and resisting part has had the biggest impact on my life. I've had to live my entire life under the ridiculous control of my parents. With this I resisted their control and moved out of their house causing them to take away everything I had and losing the respect of my family. This is a huge factor of my life now that I got away from everything even though I was left with nothing.
ReplyDeletei agree to that the control of everyone is a big scare for everyone in today's society no one wants to be controlled they want to control themselves for what they want to do or say on their own
DeleteI agree with you on that. I do have have to say that I am a lot happier having control over my own life.
DeleteI agree with you. I feel much happier now that I'm not living with my parents. They always had stupid rules that I obviously had to obey. Now I don't.
DeleteI agree with you. When I was able to move out and be on my own without my parents help, I do not feel controlled now.
DeleteBeing that i was in the military control is a big part everywhere just people don't see it or don't want to believe it so i myself can see that control can be a big factor in how people think and perceive dystopian literature in today's society. The fact that it could be a big factor in the future no one knows and no one will ever know til it happens.
ReplyDeleteLook guys I am just gonna say this and I am not trying to piss anyone off but lets think about this real quick cost makes this impossible so lets start off take a tracking chip for example for your average animal one it will cost roughly $100 not counting the surgery to implant it. So with medical costs constantly rising you must also take into consideration that the current population of the US is roughly 317 million people! So even if you just took the costs of chips (not counting the cost of chips to be implanted via surgery) you get a price tag of at least $30 billion dollars! Thats with the price of dog trackers so for people obviously the price would be greater. Not counting the cost of transmitters, receivers, and possibly satellites that is billions their to so do you honestly think any of this stuff will be possible? The answer is no because you will end up with this project costing the country trillions of dollars and do you think the government has the funds to throw at this project.
DeleteThe government can print off as much money as they want and or need, they've done it multiple times for wars etc. and at billions of dollars. Why do you think there is an American deficit? That's exactly why. If the government wanted to, they could, it is possible.
DeleteIt will for sure be too late by the time it's figured out, if it ever does get figured out.
ReplyDeleteWhat I find most relatable is the technology. I have no control over what becomes popular in technology. When I got my first smartphone I downloaded lots of new things. Then twitter, then vine, and I finally realized how much of life I was missing and started to limit my use and I have definetly been a lot more happy since distancing myself from my phone.
ReplyDeleteDrew I totally agree with you. Technology eats people lives and it has gotten to the point where no one knows how to use a hard bound book or even write in cursive. I have a feeling that one day there will not be such a thing as actually sitting down to write or even hard or paper back books which makes me very sad.
DeleteDefinitely agree with you on the fact that smart phones have taken over the social aspect of the world and culture.
DeleteWell really I don't really think something like this could happen because our government cannot agree on something like a farm bill I highly doubt they could do anything all encompassing and control every part of our lives. But that is not to say that I do not acknowledge that their are somethings that are a bit disconcerting the idea of all this drone technology is a very sore point for me if only just because the air squadron that was stationed in Des Moines being replaced by drones. Getting back to my original point I can see how many people can start to believe that these simple devices could be spying on you coupled with all the news involving the NSA it is clear to see why so many people are worried about this issue. But again I must stress with our government preforming filibuster after filibuster to pass simple laws and suc do you honestly think that we will ever have constant survalince on use plus think of the cost possibly trillions of dollars to set up communication relays the trackers themselves plus all the equipment it is super impractical!! So anyway I mostly just think of the technological aspect of dystopia not to put anyone down it is just my opinion and I am in no way trying to ruin anyones favorite books it is just my opinion nothing more.
ReplyDeleteI'd like everyone who reads this to go to their web browser in the address bar and type in Illuminati backwards and comment and tell me what you see, that's itanimulli.com
ReplyDeleteLOL
DeleteI believe the control applies most to my life. Having to be controlled by my parents until I was 18 was horrible. I've been kicked out of my house many times for ridiculous reasons. Now, I sort of have control over my life minus the stupid government. I hate the government
ReplyDeleteThe control and resistance has a big impact on my life. Living with my parents while going to college is really hard because my father thinks he still controls my life just because I live under his rules. I can't even take a nap without getting yelled at by my father. Even though technology is a big part of my life I can control that more than I can my parents.
ReplyDeleteI guess government control applies most to me. Everything costs money and nothing is getting cheaper. If you want to hunt or fish or own a gun you have to be registered into a system. Now they are spying on everyone. The thing I hate most is taxes because it is really the only thing that affects me personally. I hate seeing almost half of my paycheck go to them when they aren't really changing anything for the better of the people. Just have to deal I guess lol
ReplyDeleteThe spying thing creeps me out. I have a friend that has a connect for his xbox, and the thing takes pictures every so many seconds. Even when the xbox is off it still takes pictures, and you know that the government has access to all that crap. I do not care who you are that is creeptacular.
DeleteAnnie! My new favorite word! Creeptacular.
DeleteFor sure it is scary. You should read Little Brother - let me know if you want to borrow it, I have it. It's all about spying and the spying the DHS and NSA do. Pretty scary.
Government control seems to be on my mind lately, with all the new taxes we are forced to pay. And also with the new health care bill, forcing us to move over even though some people do not agree with because of religious beliefs. The government is also able to hack into personal stuff on people's computers. I feel like some of the type of books I have read that could fall in the category of dystopia have already showed the dangers of this.
ReplyDeleteI would have to say the technology is the thing I can mostly relate to my life. I was trying to help my youngest brother with homework and he struggled so hard because he did not know how to read his book to do his work because almost everything is done by something electronic. The art of writing is also going away because of computers. They are taking cursive out of school curiculum. It makes me so sad to know that one day there will be no books it will all be electronic. I also know technology is supposed to make our lives easier but it also really complicates it in the long run. This happens everyday at my job we document into headsets and half the time the headset does not listen to what you say so you spend so much time repeating yourself that you can not get anything charted. I do not mean to rant but these are just a few of my opinions.
ReplyDeleteI feel that it technology plays a giant role in my life right now. Especially being in college. So much of it takes place on the computer, and though I do see the benefits (like saving paper) of doing things this way, it does not mean I like it. I think it disconnects me from the outside world.
ReplyDeletei don't like it either. even when we don't want to use technology, we have to use technology.
DeleteI believe the love part of Dystopia most relates to me because I would do anything for a member of my family. This is just how close we are and how much we stand up for each other. Just like in the Hunger Games, I would volunteer in a heart beat for my little sister.
ReplyDeleteIt's great that love is what you relate to most out of the four parts of dystopia. I feel like most people with younger siblings feel the same way and that that is part of the reason the Hunger Games is such a great story.
DeleteOf the four parts to dystopia, I feel that resistance applies to my life the most. I definitely have the tendency to fight for what I believe in and not back down from a confrontation. If something matters to me I will stand behind whatever it is without hesitation and defend what I believe in.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on that Levi. You won't get anywhere if you don't stand up for what you believe in and pull through with it. If people don't defend and stand up for what they believe in they'll lose the hope and confidence that they had over whatever it was and what is still to come. If people could do this it would make them stronger as a person, build character, and gain respect even though some people will deny what you believe. It doesn't really matter what other people think of your beliefs and all that, but as long as you're the one that's happy, that's what really matters because it's your life and not theirs.
Deletecontrol seems to be the big thing in my life. in order to make money you have to have money. money is created by the government. the media decides what news we see, or hear. were even told what we have to learn. i don't like it.
ReplyDeleteWhat i have seen in my life is the take over of technology. As i went through high school i saw all the trends and fad that kids were getting into and how twitter took over and soon came along instagram into our lives.
ReplyDeleteit is all about trends just like the chip that causes the feed I considered a fad
