I had to actually reference my mom in order to answer this question, but I was read nursery rhymes as a baby and though I have no recollection of them, I'm sure that I greatly enjoyed hearing them between spitting up on myself and diaper changing sessions.
I like Levi had to ask to find out when because I remember for sure the first time I heard poetry was when I was old enough to go through nursery rhymes with my mother. She said she read to me when I was little but I do not really remember until I was like five or six.
My problem is I van remember really early poetry covers like I remember a ryeme about a bat in a church and this really nice water color bat on the cover but I am afraid when I think of the book in my head all I see is that bat and the title and author just being a yellow blob.
Gonna have to cop out on this one but Dr. Suess is the first example that pops in my head I remember earlier examples but for the life of me I cannot remember the names of them. So for lets play it safe and go with The Cat In the Hat.
I remember I used to get shel Silverstein books at the library all the time lol Those are like the only books I read in 1st and 2nd grade, then they told me I should read "Little Women" in third grade and to me that book seemed like a giant back then haha
My exposure to poetry was when I was being taught to read. I don't really remember all the things i started reading but I know around second grade Silverstein was the big deal at my school.
I was probably first exposed to poetry in grade school when we learned how to read and write. Then given assignments to write a poem for mothers day and different projects. These lessons referred back to nursery rimes and such but this is the first I can remember.
My Grandma bought me a poem book where you could write poems and i wrote a lot! Even though i was young so they were rhyming poems ( which i know you hate) and i even won a contest and even got to go to a writing conference at Graceland University.

I would zone out while they were being read to me and end up writing my own poems that would rhyme very little if they rhymed at all.

ReplyDeleteThe Cat in the Hat is definitely a safe bet. It's very rare for kids to get through childhood without hear that story at least a couple dozen time.

ReplyDeleteSilverstein was a big deal in my school around that time as well. That's all the teachers would read to us when it came to poetry.
DeleteWe used to have so many Dr. Suess and just other kids books like that at home when I was young. I remember reading them all the time back in the day.

ReplyDeleteI wasn't into nursery rhymes much when I was a kid either. But now I love looking back and reading them and seeing the different ones.
