I'm VERY excited about our Shakespeare unit. It's my most favorite type of theater. Many people are afraid of Shakespeare, or find him boring, because the language is hard to understand. We will work on converting that and see attempt to tackle it together.
Have you ever seen any Shakespeare? My favorite Shakespearean play is Twelfth Night, it's a HILARIOUS comedy. If I were to pick a drama, it would be Hamlet.
I've read a ton of Shakespeare throughout middle school and high school but I didn't really understand it until high school when we went into depth of what the words and phrases converted to in our language today. It's a lot easier to read and understand when you know the meanings of those. Having read a lot of his plays and excerpts, I have not seen any of them in action except for the typical like Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you the only one I have ever seen acted out was Romeo and Juliet. I am excited to read Macbeth because the only other piece I have read is the above mentioned title.
DeleteIn high school we had to read a Shakespeare play every year. Starting with Romeo and Juliette, Much Ado About Nothing, and MacBeth. I forgot the third one but I didn't particularly care about any of them. We had to act out MacBeth on camera and that was not anything I would care for either.
ReplyDeleteThough it might not be overly enjoyable to act out, I feel that reading different pieces of Shakespeare can be beneficial. He is one of the most famous play writers in history and having knowledge about his writings will help in most literature classes simply because the subject of Shakespeare is likely to come up.
DeleteWe had to go over romeo and Juliet in high school.
ReplyDeleteYeah it was not very good was it? I mean maybe if you did not know the end of the story going in maybe it would be more interesting but its hard to get into a story when you already know how it will end plus its a pretty convoluted plot I mean the messenger literally is less then a minute late and their goes Romeo riding off I mean wow convenient? Plus then you have all the convenient plot items like the poison and the sleeping potion? I mean the guy who made this stuff should be rich! Give me some of that sleep stuff could have used that as a type of anesthetic.
DeleteYea it was really hard to get into especially because I was a very immature freshman at the time lol
DeleteI had to do Shakespeare every single year of high school I had to do Macbeth three times in high school my Freshman, Junior, and Senior year. I had to read Romeo and Juliet my Freshman year. Julius Ceaser my Sophomore year. Plus we may have had to do Hamlet but I am not 100% about Hamlet anyway I am neutral towards Shakespeare some of his stuff is awful! But then some of his stuff is OK its kind of Russian Roulette with Shakespeare.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with you there I think Shakespeare is hit and miss.
DeleteI have never read any of Shakespeare's work other than Romeo and Juliet and Julius Ceaser. I am excited to read Macbeth and look at in psychological point of view and pick it out. I have only seen Romeo and Juliet, and Julius Ceaser acted out for a film never anything in person.
ReplyDeleteI have read/seen quite a few of Shakespeare's plays like, Merchant of Venice, Midsummer Night's Dream, Much Ado About Nothing, Taming of the Shrew, Hamlet Othello, King Lear, Julius Cesaer, Macbeth, and of course Romeo and Juliet. There might even be more but I can't think of them off the top of my head.
ReplyDeleteI have heard that Midsummer Night's Dream is good. Have not read any myself though
DeleteI have not been exposed to much of Shakespeare's writings at all. The only piece of his writing that I ever read was Romeo and Juliet in one of my high school literature classes. I did enjoy it and didn't struggle with the language too much so I look forward to reading Macbeth.
ReplyDeleteIn elementary school we did Hamlet and also watched A Mid Summer Nights Dream. In high school, just like most, we read Romeo and Juliet. Reading these plays eventually made sense, but the old slang is hard to grab a hold of and understand. I'm sure that is what Shakespeare would say about our language today too.
ReplyDeleteYou are totally right, Shakespeare wouldn't have the damnedest clue as to the meaning of the language we use today. He'd be just as dumbfounded as we are when we read his plays.
DeleteI'm with everyone on having read a lot of his work throughout my learning career, I also saw Romeo and Juliet in high school. Our drama team was pretty fantastic actually. It made it so funny to watch some of my friends and peers act out the play and I laughed quite a bit at some parts. But it was pretty interesting to watch and see the words and text come to life. There's sooo much more feeling and wow ness in speaking and acting rather than writing. If I was a college professor, all of my students essays would be done orally.
ReplyDeleteI have never read or seen any Shakespeare. My friend in high school was big into plays and things like that and talked too much about it so i tried to stay clear of that, nothing against her!
