Meta

The term metafiction is defined as such:

Metafiction, also known as romantic irony in the context of Romantic works of literature, uses self-reference to draw attention to itself as a work of art, while exposing the "truth" of a story. "Metafiction" is the literary term describing fictional writing that self-consciously and systematically draws attention to its status as an artifact in posing questions about the relationship between fiction and reality, usually using irony and self-reflection. It can be compared to presentational theatre, which does not let the audience forget it is viewing a play; metafiction does not let the reader forget he or she is reading a fictional work.

How does this term apply to The Real Inspector Hound?

  1. I am not really sure I understand this term but here goes nothing I think this term is shown at the end when Magnus turns out to be Cynthia's husband and the real inspesctor hound. Considering that he wanted to date Cynthia when he was pretending to be the long lost brother of her late husband. I am not sure this is right but hopefully kinda close.

  3. So I am going to go out on a limb here and say that whatever it is applies to the story because you have some terrible play that no one is really paying attention to in the story going on showing that there is a story in a story? So because you have the "real" world and the show world in the same story is this something to be impressed about? I am not claiming to understand the depth of this story and who knows I could be dead wrong but I feel like this is not something special having a story in a story (once again I have no idea what you want out of these questions even after reading the links in the question) but the story feels way to busy its hard to understand whats going on with random characters talking with both the actors and the critics droning on I have no idea whats going on half the time! I mean isn't a sign of a good author to be able to convey the story clearly? Correct me if I am wrong but this author makes it pretty difficult to understand whats going on in the story and maybe thats the point to confuse you and to blur the lines between the real world and whats going on in a story.

    1. You did very well for simply going out on a limb sir. The fact that there is a play within a play is what gives this story the meta fiction that the author wanted it to have.

  6. Meta fiction is applied in this play because it is a play within a play in which some of the actors are pretending to be other actors. This makes the audience very aware of how many multiple personsonas each actor has to convey in order to make the play work the way the writer intended.

  8. Yes, inspector hound just seems very fictional the whole time even though it's pretty confusing. It doesn't let you forget its fiction
